EATING DISORDERS

Eating disorders are never about food. Whether you find yourself bingeing, purging, or restricting, you’re trying to add some kind of structure and meaning to a life that feels out of control, even at the cost of harming yourself.

As someone who has an eating disorder, you’re taking control in a way that feels good and that can be socially reinforced. Our therapeutic approach to eating disorders begins with a respect for this need for control. Using EMDR, we can help you address eating disorders by finding and processing traumatic memories that gave you the negative cognitions that underlie eating disorders. Maybe how your parents treated you at the dinner table, or commented about your weight, made you believe that you’re no good unless you can control how you look through food or that you need to discipline yourself by restricting food. Using talk therapy, we can help you understand how your genuine needs for coping and control can be expressed in more adaptive ways. Using neurofeedback, we can help to reinforce brainwave patterns that reduce stress around food-related thoughts and behaviors.
